Since the early 1960’s, a small group of artists has been experimenting with ways to relate their work to a broad range of references far beyond the boundaries of the traditional aesthetic. Prompted by the political legacy of the sixties, the ongoing search for a vital vocabulary, and a sense of the sterility of the gallery scene, these artists have (whatever their stylistic inclination) turned to the public, not as a receptacle for their ideas, but as a stimulus.
